About Deborah Jaffe
I am a London based professional events photographer. My work is wide-ranging with a particular focus on Dance and Performance Photography as well as Photographic Collages. I love capturing the essence of a moment, whether that is the beauty of a movement or emotion in a performance or the candid capture of an observed moment in everyday life. My work ranges from the photo documentation of public and private events to photographic collage commissions to portraits of people in context.
I trained in Fine Art Printmaking and Photo Media at Central Saint Martins College of Art [1986-89], where I was awarded the Phoebe Llewellyn Scholarship for outstanding work and the Cecil Collins Memorial Prize for my Final Year Degree Show. I went on to do Postgraduates at Central Saint Martins (Printmaking) and later Wimbledon School of Art (Sculpture). Between these postgraduate studies, I set up, taught and ran for a number of years the printmaking section at Kensington and Chelsea College (Adult and Further Education) as well as teaching Drawing and Mixed Media for Westminster Adult Education. I have subsequently worked as an Independent Fine Artist, making mixed media prints and photographic collages, exhibiting and selling work through various exhibitions and galleries, and as a performing arts and wide-ranging events photographer, working to commission.
I am forever indebted to the late Mari Bicknell [1914-2003] whose fantastic and wonderfully creative dance company for children, ‘The Cambridge Ballet Workshop’ – with its emphasis on encouraging the artist within each child and giving them the opportunity to perform in real professionally mounted stage productions – gave me, along with so many others involved as both children and teenagers, one of the greatest artistic, educational and life-forming experiences. This not only kindled my passion for dance and performance, it has without doubt helped to inform my eye and strongly influence my visual artistic practice ever onwards.
